Future plans in European Portuguese

This lesson opens Unit 16, Plans and opinions (Planos e opiniões), an A2 unit in which you talk about plans and wishes, give your opinion, agree or disagree, and compare things. You will meet 7 new words, such as para o ano (next year), estar a pensar em (to be thinking of) and daqui a pouco (in a moment), in 10 short sentences you can listen to. By the end you can say things like Eu estou a pensar em mudar de casa (“I'm thinking of moving house”). The unit’s grammar notes cover “Gostava de: I would like to” and “Apetece-me: I feel like”.

  • Para o ano eu vou aprender a conduzir.Next year I'm going to learn to drive.Para o ano = next year. Aprender a + infinitive = to learn to do something.
  • Eu estou a pensar em mudar de casa.I'm thinking of moving house.Estar a pensar em + infinitive = to be thinking of doing something.
  • Nós vamos mudar de casa daqui a duas semanas.We're moving house in two weeks.Daqui a + time = in (time from now).
  • O que é que tu vais fazer no fim de semana?What are you going to do at the weekend?
  • Eu não sei, vamos ver.I don't know, we'll see.Also very common in Portugal: logo se vê ("we'll see").
  • Nós vamos jantar daqui a pouco.We're having dinner in a moment.
  • No próximo verão nós vamos aos Açores.Next summer we're going to the Azores.Aos = a + os: ir aos Açores.
  • Para o ano a Rita vai trabalhar no Porto.Next year Rita is going to work in Porto.
  • Os meus pais estão a pensar em viver no Algarve.My parents are thinking of living in the Algarve.
  • Quando é que tu vais mudar de casa?When are you going to move house?
