Unit notes

Estou? Answering the phone

In Portugal you answer the phone with Estou? (literally "I am?"), Está? or simply Sim? The caller then says who they are: Fala o Pedro. or É o Pedro. ("It's Pedro.")

To ask for someone, say Posso falar com a Ana? In offices you will hear É da parte de quem? ("Who's calling?"). Answer with Da parte de…: Da parte do Rui.

Um momento means "one moment". If the person is out, you will hear Não está. ("He's not in." / "She's not in.")

  • Estou? Quem fala?Hello? Who's speaking?
  • Posso falar com o Pedro, se faz favor? Can I speak to Pedro, please?
  • Um momento, se faz favor. One moment, please.

Ligo-te and ligo-lhe

Ligar (to call) uses small pronouns for the person you call: me (me), te (you, to a friend) and lhe (him, her, or "you" with extra respect). They go after the verb, with a hyphen: Eu ligo-te amanhã. Eu ligo-lhe amanhã. With nós, the verb keeps its s: Nós ligamos-lhe.

The pronoun moves in front of the verb after não, já, question words and que: Ela não me ligou. Quando é que me ligas? Acho que ele te ligou.

Dizer (to tell) and mandar (to send) work the same way: Diz-lhe que eu liguei. Eu mando-te uma mensagem.

  • Eu ligo-te amanhã.I'll call you tomorrow.
  • Eu ligo-lhe amanhã.I'll call you tomorrow. (with extra respect)
  • A Marta não me ligou.Marta didn't call me.

Numbers from 100 to 1000

Cem is exactly 100. From 101 to 199 it becomes cento e…: cento e um, cento e vinte. Then come duzentos (200), trezentos (300), quatrocentos (400), quinhentos (500), seiscentos (600), setecentos (700), oitocentos (800), novecentos (900) and mil (1000), with no word for "one" in front.

From 200 to 900, the hundreds agree with the noun, just like um/uma and dois/duas: duzentos euros, but duzentas pessoas. Cem and mil never change.

Put e (and) between the hundreds and the tens, and between the tens and the units: trezentos e quarenta e cinco. Phone numbers have nine digits and are usually read in groups of three.

  • O voo para a Madeira custa duzentos euros. The flight to Madeira costs two hundred euros.
  • Há duzentas pessoas na festa. There are two hundred people at the party.
  • São cento e dez euros, se faz favor. That's a hundred and ten euros, please.

Dates and years

For a date, say o dia + number + de + month: o dia cinco de maio. Months are written in lower case. "On" a date is no dia or simply a: no dia cinco de maio or a cinco de maio.

To ask the date, say Que dia é hoje? or, very Portuguese, A quantos estamos? The answer: Estamos a cinco de maio.

Years are said as one big number: 1990 is mil novecentos e noventa and 2026 is dois mil e vinte e seis. "In" a year is em. For birthdays, Portugal says fazer anos: Eu faço anos em março. ("My birthday is in March.")

  • Hoje é dia cinco de maio.Today is the fifth of May.
  • Nós chegámos a Portugal em dois mil e vinte e seis.We arrived in Portugal in 2026.
  • A Rita faz anos amanhã.It's Rita's birthday tomorrow.

Spelling: arroba and ponto

In an email address, @ is arroba and the dot is ponto: ana arroba gmail ponto com. Portuguese addresses often end in ponto pt. A hyphen is hífen.

Letters have their own names. Some useful ones: agá (h), jota (j), erre (r), esse (s), xis (x) and ípsilon (y). A double letter is dois erres, dois esses.
