Unit notes

O meu, a minha: "my" takes the article

In Portugal, possessives normally come with the article: o meu pai ("my father"), a minha mãe ("my mother"). Without the article it sounds foreign.

The possessive agrees with the person or thing you have, not with you. A man and a woman both say a minha irmã and o meu irmão.

"My" is o meu, a minha, os meus, as minhas. Informal "your" is o teu, a tua, os teus, as tuas. The formal "your" is o seu, a sua.

  • O meu pai é português.My father is Portuguese.
  • As minhas irmãs são altas. My sisters are tall.
  • Como se chama a tua mãe?What's your mother's name?

Este, esta: introducing people

To introduce someone, say Este é… for a man or boy and Esta é… for a woman or girl. For more than one person, use Estes são… or Estas são…. A mixed group takes estes.

In normal sentences, names take the article: Este é o Pedro. When you talk to someone directly, drop it: Olá, Pedro!

  • Esta é a minha mulher.This is my wife.
  • Este é o Pedro, o meu namorado.This is Pedro, my boyfriend.
  • Estes são os meus avós.These are my grandparents.

Adjectives agree

Adjectives match the person they describe. Most end in -o for masculine and -a for feminine: alto, alta; simpático, simpática. For the plural, add -s: altos, simpáticas.

For older and younger brothers and sisters, say mais velho and mais novo: o meu irmão mais novo, a minha irmã mais velha.

Giro is a very Portuguese word for "cute" or "good-looking". You will hear Que giro! ("How cute!") all the time.

  • O meu pai é alto e a minha mãe é baixa. My father is tall and my mother is short.
  • Os teus primos são muito simpáticos.Your cousins are very nice.
  • O bebé é muito giro! The baby is very cute!

Plurals and mixed groups

Most plurals just add -s: o filho, os filhos; a tia, as tias. Many words ending in -ão add -s too: o irmão, os irmãos. Others change, like o cão, os cães.

The masculine plural is used for mixed groups, so these words cover both sexes: os pais (parents), os irmãos (brothers and sisters), os filhos (children), os tios (aunts and uncles) and os avós (grandparents).

  • Tens irmãos?Do you have any brothers or sisters?
  • Eu tenho dois filhos.I have two children.
  • Os meus avós são do Algarve. My grandparents are from the Algarve.

Avô or avó?

These two words differ only in the accent, and the accent shows the sound. O avô (grandfather) has a closed o, similar to the "o" in "go". A avó (grandmother) has an open o, like the "aw" in "law". Grandparents together are os avós, with the open sound.

Mãe has a nasal sound: say "my" through your nose. Pai rhymes with English "pie".

  • O meu avô e a minha avó.My grandfather and my grandmother.
  • Olá, mãe! Olá, pai!Hi, Mum! Hi, Dad!
